It’s one of the most common questions we hear in our Sevierville showroom: “Motorized shades look great, but are they actually worth it?” It’s a fair question. Motorized window treatments are an upgrade over standard cordless or corded operation, and nobody wants to pay for a feature they won’t use.
Here’s our honest take, after installing them in homes all across East Tennessee — including who gets the most out of them, and when they may not be necessary.
What “motorized” actually means
A motorized window treatment replaces the cord or wand with a small, quiet motor built into the headrail. You raise, lower, or tilt your shades with a handheld remote, a smartphone app, a wall switch, or even your voice through a smart-home system. You can also set them on a schedule — shades that lower automatically in the afternoon to block the heat, or open gently in the morning.
Power comes one of three ways: a rechargeable battery, a plug-in transformer, or a hardwired connection run during construction. The real reasons people love them
Hard-to-reach and oversized windows. This is the number-one practical reason, and honestly the easiest to justify. Tall two-story windows, transoms above a front door, a wall of glass in a great room, or shades over a garden tub — if you’d need a ladder or a long pole to operate them, motorization turns a chore into a button press. Windows you used to ignore actually get used.
Child and pet safety. Motorized shades have no dangling cords, which eliminates a real hazard for young children and pets. For families, this alone is often the deciding factor.
Protecting your home and lowering energy costs. Because you can put them on a schedule, motorized shades close during the hottest part of the day whether or not you’re home — keeping East Tennessee summer heat out, easing the load on your HVAC, and shielding your floors, furniture, and artwork from sun fading. Paired with cellular (honeycomb) shades, the energy benefit is even stronger.
Convenience and whole-home control. With a smart system you can operate every shade in the house at once, or set “scenes” — all shades down for movie night, all up in the morning. Integrate with Alexa, Google, or a smart-home hub and it becomes part of how the whole house runs.
Accessibility. For anyone with limited mobility, arthritis, or who simply doesn’t want to reach and pull, motorization makes every window in the home easy to manage independently.
Who gets the most out of motorization
In our experience, motorized treatments are absolutely worth it if you have:
- Large, tall, or hard-to-reach windows — the clearest payoff, every time
- Young children or pets — the cordless safety benefit
- Sunrooms, great rooms, or lots of glass — where scheduling saves energy and protects furnishings
- A cabin or rental property in the Smokies — guests love the wow factor, and you can manage shades remotely
- A smart home — where shades become one more thing you control from your phone or voice
So — is it worth it?
We’ll be straight with you: motorization is a premium feature, and it isn’t essential on every window. A single, easy-to-reach shade in a spare bedroom probably doesn’t need a motor. But for the windows that are hard to reach, for homes with kids or pets, for big glass that drives up your cooling bill, and for anyone who wants their whole home to work at the touch of a button — yes, it’s worth it, and the people who add it rarely go back.
